Interreg | foodCIRCUS (Circular Solutions for Keeping Food Waste out of Central Europe’s Schools)

About the project

Food waste has negative social, environmental, and economical impacts. It is estimated that about 20% of all food produced is wasted in the EU every year - and school canteens even throw away up to 70% of their prepared meals. The foodCIRCUS is an Interreg Central Europe project that addresses food waste in school canteens and kindergartens through prevention, raising awareness, optimisation, redistribution, and circular valorisation of unavoidable leftovers.

The project brings together partners from several Central European countries to test pilot actions, generate evidence, and develop a joint strategy for reducing school food waste while exploring innovative methods.

REPLOID Group AG explores the use of insects as a sustainable pathway for valorising selected food waste streams from school canteens. As an industrial partner with hands-on expertise in insect-based organic residue processing, REPLOID takes a specialised, practice-oriented role in the project – designing and testing how pre-sorted canteen food waste can be safely and efficiently integrated into insect-based production processes.

Objectives

  • Reduce food waste in school and kindergarten canteens by around 25%  as a mean value across all participating sites

  • Provide user-friendly tools, guidelines and best-practice solutions for food waste prevention during menu planning, preparation, serving and consumption

  • Test and scale approaches to redistribute edible leftovers and to process unavoidable waste, for example via insect feeding, biogas or bioplastics.

  • Develop a comprehensive strategy and practical guidelines for food waste prevention and sustainable school meal management in Central Europe

  • Build a cross-border network of organisations collaborating on low-waste, circular school food systems and environmental education for pupils
