Short generation time
A new generation of Black Soldier Flies develops in approximately 1.5 months. This is significantly shorter than the average 12-month cycle of conventional livestock, making performance improvements achievable much faster.
REPLOID translates the natural bioconversion capabilities of the Black Soldier Fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) into an industrial process for the valorization of organic residual materials. Organic waste streams are transformed into new raw materials for a wide range of applications. The insect larvae provide not only high-quality proteins and fats, but also functional components that support animal health and plant growth - including chitin, antimicrobial peptides, and lauric acid.
Research and Development (R&D) is centered at REPLOIDâs Global Innovation Center in Leipzig, Germany. In addition, the company operates a competence center in Pegau, Germany, focused on the development and production of organic fertilizers.
The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is a biological high-performance system: rapid growth, high reproduction rates, and an extremely short generation cycle. This is exactly what makes it so valuable for REPLOID, because advancements in breeding, feeding, and process management can be realized within very short development cycles.

Larvae can process hundreds of different organic residual materials. At the same time, they are valuable sources of raw materials: protein, fat, insect frass, and functional components for animal feed.

What works biologically is translated into stable industrial processes, reproducible results, and economically viable products.
REPLOIDâs R&D approach considers every step of the value chain - from residual material to larvae to market-ready products.
Feed Formulations
We develop customized feed formulations based on organic residual materials. These formulations are tailored to the specifications of individual ReFarmUnit locations: the physical properties and nutrient profiles of the input materials, the requirements of plant operators, and the desired output. In this way, waste disposal challenges are transformed into high-performance feed solutions that ensure stable larval performance.
High-Performance Larval Strains
The short generation cycle of the Black Soldier Fly creates enormous potential for breeding progress. REPLOID develops high-performance larval strains that are better adapted to specific residual materials, production environments, and target products.
Product R&D
Different process parameters and processing methods result in products with varying added value â ranging from feed applications to fertilizers and other bio-based applications. Product development is not limited to protein and fat content, but also focuses on functional components such as chitin, antimicrobial peptides, and lauric acid.
Insect Frass
For REPLOID, insect larval excretions are neither a by-product nor waste. Instead, insect frass is considered a product platform. Through process optimization and substrate strategies, we develop solid and liquid solutions for fertilization and biostimulation.
REPLOID collaborates with universities, research institutions, and industry partners to bring new insights into practical application more quickly. In doing so, we combine internal expertise with external excellence â across Europe and throughout the entire value chain.
Funded research and innovation projects are a central part of our development activities. They create the space to systematically test new biological, technical, and product-related approaches and translate them into market-ready solutions.
